Course Description

Join us for a conversation with Barrett Young, CPA, Partner at Garbelman Winslow CPAs. Growing up, he lived in a largely homogenous community. After joining the Marine Corps, that changed immediately where almost half of his platoon were minorities from different backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. In the Corps, there was a saying “we all bleed green.” It rings familiar to the phrase “I don’t see color”, which he has come to see both sides of that statement – the intention and the impact.

Barrett will be joining us to talk about how his perspective around this phrase has changed and how talking about it can start a conversation rather than an argument. We hope you join the conversation!

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the difference between intention and impact

  • Recall language and terminology of diversity and inclusion

  • Identify communication strategies for talking about sensitive topics or engaging in uncomfortable conversations

Barrett entered public accounting in 2006 after an enlistment in the Marines post-9/11. Shortly after becoming a CPA, he started his own practice providing outsourced accounting services, which he ran for 6 years. Having built the company he thought he wanted, he started to miss being a part of a team and didn't feel like he was making an impact on the profession any longer. This led him to reach out to one of his mentors, joining her at her company, Garbelman Winslow, CPAs, in 2017, and eventually becoming her partner in 2020.

Barrett lives in Charles County MD with his wife and two kids (daughter, 13, and son, 11). In his free time, he competes in and organizes strongman contests, and loves to spend his weekends by the pool with some kind of pork on the smoker.
