Every day a new hashtag, trend, or buzzword is born into the universe of content. The latest in marketing and PR is trendjacking.
Trendjacking simply put, is the act of capitalizing on a present trend in the news or social media in order to boost a company or personal brand. You could call it a cultivated form of viral marketing. Trendjacking can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the context of the message and how your audience receives it. If used correctly, trendjacking can equal free publicity and create a brand or establish a user as the subject matter expert on a specific topic.
Unfortunately, trendjacking can also have a negative effect when the “jacker” doesn’t perform due diligence on the origin of the trend or ensure there are no conflicts with company trademarks. Join Kacee Johnson and Misty Megia in their new series “Marketing Minutes” to learn about the do’s and don’ts of #trendjacking.
