Course Description

A flurry of activity during the final year of the last administration, and the arrival of a new administration has created some uncertainty about payroll compliance rules. Further changes may be coming from the federal agencies and the U.S. Congress. This topic helps those responsible for payroll compliance to understand the changes that have already been made, and what may be on the horizon. It also explains step-by-step how to comply with the existing rules on overtime, tipped employees, interns and the auto dealer exemption. Failing to keep up to date on legislative and regulatory changes that affect payroll compliance may expose employers to penalties and civil liability. This information is critical to ensure that employers are up to date on important payroll compliance issues.

After you have attended this program:

  • You will be able to explain the current rules on the salary basis component of the white collar exemptions from the FLSA.

  • You will understand how the FLSA applies to tipped employees under the FLSA, in light of recent federal legislation.

  • You will be able to apply the new standards announced by the Department of Labor fordetermining whether the FLSA requirements to pay overtime and minimum wage apply to interns.

  • You will be able to evaluate whether workers are independent contractors or employees.
